Description

The Calotropis fruit fly (Dacus longistylus) is a destructive insect pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is widely recognized as a specialized feeder that predominantly targets plants within the Asclepiadaceae family, specifically the Calotropis procera shrub.

The geographical distribution of this fly includes arid and semi-arid zones throughout Africa and the Middle East. As an obligate parasite of these plants, it has evolved complex physiological adaptations to survive within the protective tissues of the fruit while avoiding potential plant defensive chemicals.

The life cycle encompasses four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females use a sharp ovipositor to penetrate the fruit wall and deposit eggs directly into the pulp. The larvae develop rapidly inside, consuming the interior tissues and seeds, which prevents the host plant from successfully propagating through seeds.
