Description

The Masai fruit fly (Dacus masaicus) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Tephritidae family within the order Diptera. Known primarily for its impact in certain tropical and subtropical regions, this species has gained attention due to the severe economic losses it imposes on local vegetable producers.

This pest is primarily associated with plants in the Cucurbitaceae family. Crops such as cucumbers, pumpkins, squashes, and various melons serve as preferred hosts for oviposition and larval development. The fly's preference for these hosts makes it a recurring concern for farmers cultivating cucurbits in its endemic areas.

The biology of Dacus masaicus follows a typical tephritid cycle: eggs are deposited beneath the host plant's epidermis using the female’s ovipositor. The larvae subsequently tunnel through the fruit, consuming internal tissues.
