Dacus mochii is a species of fruit fly belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. As an agricultural pest, it is known for its ability to infest various crops, primarily targeting members of the Cucurbitaceae family, leading to significant economic losses for producers.
The host range is focused on vegetables where the female fly can easily deposit her eggs within the fruit tissue. The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which consume the internal part of the fruit, causing structural breakdown, rapid rotting, and total loss of commercial viability for the crop.
The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The fly inserts its eggs into the host fruit using its ovipositor. This pest can devastate entire fields if left unmanaged, as the internal feeding habit makes it difficult to detect the infestation until visible rotting occurs.
