Dacus mulgens

Dacus mulgens is a species of fruit fly belonging to the family Tephritidae and the order Diptera. This insect is a significant pest primarily found in tropical and subtropical climates. Within its taxonomy, it is known for its specialized niche in infesting various fruit and vegetable crops, making it a subject of concern for commercial agriculture.

The host range of this pest is primarily focused on the family Cucurbitaceae. Crops such as cucumbers, pumpkins, squash, and melons are highly susceptible to infestation. Because these crops are major commodities, the presence of Dacus mulgens can lead to severe economic losses if not managed appropriately from the beginning of the growing season.

The biology and lifecycle of the fly involve a rapid reproductive process. Female flies use their sharp ovipositors to puncture the surface of developing fruits and deposit eggs directly inside the tissue. Once hatched, the larvae feed voraciously on the pulp, tunneling through the interior of the fruit. This process not only consumes the fruit but also introduces pathogens that cause rapid rot.

The damage caused by this pest is visually apparent through puncture marks, soft spots on the fruit surface, and signs of premature decay. As the larvae develop, the fruit loses its structural integrity, marketability, and nutritional value. In cases of high infestation rates, entire crop yields can be lost within a short period of time if proactive measures are ignored.
