Dacus newmani, commonly referred to as Newman's fruit fly, is a destructive agricultural pest belonging to the Tephritidae family within the order Diptera. These insects are well-known for their capacity to cause widespread damage in orchards, as they target the fruits of various economically significant plant species.
The host range of this pest primarily includes a variety of tropical and subtropical fruits. The female fly uses her ovipositor to pierce the skin of the fruit, depositing eggs directly into the developing tissue. This behavior makes the fruit susceptible to internal decay, as the developing larvae begin to consume the interior once they hatch.
The life cycle follows a standard pattern of metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. As the larvae tunnel through the flesh, they introduce pathogens, leading to rapid rotting and premature fruit drop. This loss of quality renders the produce unsaleable and unsuitable for export.
