Description
The pale-sided fruit fly (Dacus pallidilatus) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. This species is known for its high destructive potential, often causing severe economic losses in tropical and subtropical agricultural systems.
The fly primarily infests plants within the Cucurbitaceae family. Commercial crops such as melons, watermelons, cucumbers, and squash are highly susceptible to its attacks. The insect is particularly dangerous because its infestation often goes unnoticed until the fruit begins to show signs of decay.
The biological cycle involves the female depositing eggs through the fruit skin into the pulp. Upon hatching, the larvae consume the internal tissues, tunneling extensively throughout the fruit. This developmental stage is critical, as it directly impacts the quality and marketability of the harvest.
Damage caused by Dacus pallidilatus is twofold: direct mechanical damage from larval feeding and secondary damage from opportunistic fungi and bacteria that enter through the exit holes. This often leads to premature fruit drop, liquefaction of the pulp, and widespread crop failure in infested fields.
