Description
Dacus pergulariae belongs to the Tephritidae family, order Diptera. This insect is recognized as a significant pest within its range, specifically adapted to exploit the fruits of plants belonging to the Apocynaceae family, particularly the genus Pergularia.
The host range is relatively specialized, which allows the fly to synchronize its life cycle with the fruiting phenology of its host plants. By targeting specific crops, this pest can cause localized but intense damage to agricultural production and natural plant populations alike.
The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female uses an ovipositor to insert eggs under the skin of developing fruits. The emerging larvae tunnel through the flesh, consuming it entirely. Once fully grown, the larvae exit the fruit to pupate in the soil.
