Fruit fly dacus

Taxonomic classification. The insect Dacus siliqualactis belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae (fruit flies). As a specialized pest, it is evolutionarily adapted to infest the internal tissues of fruit-bearing plants, making its control challenging due to the protected location of the larvae.

Host crops. This species primarily targets crops characterized by fleshy or succulent fruits. In agricultural environments, it poses a significant threat to various cucurbits and other vegetable crops where it can complete its development cycle by feeding on the internal structures of the developing ovary and fruit.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females use a sharp ovipositor to penetrate the fruit skin and deposit eggs into the pulp. The larvae feed internally, causing significant structural damage. Once mature, larvae typically exit the fruit and drop to the soil, where they transition into the pupal stage to overwinter or undergo the next generation.

Damage and economic impact. The primary damage is caused by larval feeding, which creates galleries inside the fruit. These feeding sites act as entry points for pathogens, leading to fruit rot and premature dropping. This significantly reduces the marketable yield and quality, often resulting in heavy economic losses for producers if uncontrolled.

Control measures. A successful management plan requires combining several techniques:

• Sanitation: removing and destroying all infested and fallen fruits to break the life cycle.
• Soil management: tilling the soil under the host plants to expose and kill pupae.
• Trapping: deploying attractant-based traps to monitor population levels and reduce adult numbers.
• Chemical control: applying targeted insecticides at the onset of adult emergence when necessary.
