The Solomon Islands fruit fly (Dacus solomonensis) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. This species is native to the Pacific region and is recognized as a major threat to commercial fruit production due to its high reproductive potential and ability to thrive in tropical environments.

This pest infests a wide range of tropical and subtropical fruits. The larvae are the primary damaging stage, feeding internally on the pulp of developing fruits. This feeding behavior not only destroys the marketability of the produce but also facilitates secondary infections by bacteria and molds, leading to rapid tissue decay and total loss of the fruit.

The biological cycle begins when a female fly pierces the fruit skin with her ovipositor to deposit eggs. Larval development occurs entirely inside the host fruit. Once the larvae complete their final instar, they typically emerge from the fruit and drop to the soil to pupate. The duration of this cycle depends on temperature and humidity, with warmer conditions significantly accelerating the generations.

The damage caused by Dacus solomonensis is characterized by visible puncture marks, early fruit drop, and internal breakdown of the fruit structure. The economic impact is severe, as affected plantations may suffer catastrophic losses. Furthermore, the presence of this fly can lead to strict quarantine regulations, effectively halting the export of fruit crops from the infested region.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this pest. Key strategies include:

• Regular monitoring using male-attractant traps.
• Strict field sanitation, including the collection and deep burial of all fallen fruits.
