Dacus stentor fruit fly

Systematic position. Dacus stentor is a member of the order Diptera, family Tephritidae. This species is recognized as a significant agricultural pest due to its high adaptability to colonizing specific host plants, particularly those belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family, where it spends the larval stage of its life cycle.

Crops attacked. The primary hosts for this fruit fly are various cucurbits, including cucumbers, pumpkins, and squashes. The damage is particularly severe in warmer regions where the climate facilitates rapid generation turnover and high population densities, threatening the economic viability of commercial vegetable production.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult females utilize a specialized ovipositor to pierce the surface of developing fruit and deposit eggs within the tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the fruit flesh to feed. Once fully developed, larvae typically emerge to pupate in the soil, which serves as their primary overwintering site.

Nature of damage and harm. The primary impact of Dacus stentor is the physical degradation of the fruit. As larvae feed, they facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, leading to rapid rotting and total fruit decomposition. This not only destroys the market value of the produce but also reduces overall yield, as infested fruits often abscise prematurely from the plant.
