Telfairia fruit fly

Dacus telfaireae is a significant fruit fly species belonging to the Tephritidae family. Recognized as a serious agricultural pest, it primarily targets plants within the Cucurbitaceae family. Its geographic distribution makes it a major concern for growers cultivating specific gourds and melons, as the infestation can lead to total crop loss if left uncontrolled.

The fly specifically infests crops such as the fluted pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis) and other related cucurbit species. The adults are highly attracted to the developing fruits, where they seek out suitable sites to lay their eggs. This specialization makes it a primary limiting factor in the production of these specific vegetables in tropical climates.

The biological cycle follows a typical fruit fly pattern: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female fly uses a sharp ovipositor to pierce the skin of the host fruit, depositing eggs directly into the pulp. The larvae develop rapidly, consuming the fruit's interior and causing structural breakdown, which is often exacerbated by secondary rot-causing bacteria and fungi.

The damage is characterized by soft rot, sunken dark patches on the fruit surface, and premature fruit abscission. As the larvae are concealed within the host tissue, they are protected from environmental stresses and many contact-based pesticides, making early detection and preventive strategies critical for successful crop management.

Effective management requires an integrated approach:

• Sanitation: Regularly collect and destroy all fallen or infested fruits to break the life cycle.
• Exclusion: Use fine-mesh bags or nets to cover fruits during their vulnerable growth stages.
• Monitoring: Deploy male attractant traps (parapheromones) to track population spikes.
• Cultivation: Maintain optimal plant health and remove alternative host plants nearby.
• Chemical control: Target adult populations with bait sprays before egg-laying begins, following regional guidelines.
