Fruit fly Dacus transitorius

Dacus transitorius belongs to the Tephritidae family, order Diptera. It is a specialized species of fruit flies that poses a significant threat to fruit and vegetable crops in its distribution regions. The pest is characterized by high biological plasticity, which allows it to thrive in various climatic conditions within its range.

The primary hosts for this species are plants from the Cucurbitaceae family, as well as some Solanaceae species. Adult females use their ovipositors to pierce the skin of young or ripening fruits, laying eggs directly into the flesh. This infestation renders the produce unsuitable for sale and consumption, leading to severe economic losses.

The life cycle of the species consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. A female is capable of laying dozens of eggs during her lifespan. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the internal tissues of the fruit, causing decay and premature fruit drop. The rate of development is highly temperature-dependent, determining the number of generations produced annually.

Damage symptoms appear as dark punctures on the surface of the fruit. Tissues surrounding the injection site quickly degrade, developing a soft and mushy texture. In cases of mass outbreaks, crop losses can be catastrophic, as secondary bacterial and fungal infections exploit the puncture sites, leading to the rapid total destruction of the produce.

A successful defense strategy against Dacus transitorius is based on integrated pest management (IPM). Key components include:
