The Dacus vertebratus, commonly known as a type of melon fly, is a significant insect pest belonging to the family Tephritidae in the order Diptera. It is primarily known for causing devastating losses to cucurbitaceous crops in its natural range, which covers large areas of the African continent and neighboring regions.
This pest has a high affinity for various cucurbits, including melons, cucumbers, pumpkins, and watermelons. Due to its host preference, it represents a substantial barrier to sustainable vegetable production in affected tropical and subtropical climatic zones, often requiring intensive agricultural management.
The life cycle involves distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female fly uses her ovipositor to insert eggs into the soft tissues of growing fruits.
