Description

The yellow-winged fruit fly (Dacus xanthopterus) is a member of the Tephritidae family, belonging to the order Diptera. This species is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that causes substantial economic losses in tropical and subtropical fruit-growing regions.

The pest primarily infests a wide range of horticultural crops, including species within the Cucurbitaceae and Solanaceae families. Its larvae feed on the internal tissues of the fruit, causing rapid decomposition and making the produce unsuitable for market or consumption.

The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit their eggs beneath the skin of developing fruits using an ovipositor. Once hatched, the larvae develop inside, effectively destroying the interior of the host fruit throughout their growth period.
