Dalbulus elimatus
Description
Systematic position. Dalbulus elimatus belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a specialized insect species primarily known for its role as a significant pest in maize-growing regions of the Americas, where it thrives in association with various grass species.
Crops and economic impact. The primary host plant for this insect is maize (Zea mays). While direct feeding damage can be significant, the most severe economic impact arises from its capacity to transmit pathogens, including phytoplasmas and viruses that induce stunting and other lethal diseases in maize, causing widespread crop failure.
Biology and life cycle. This species undergoes hemimetabolous development. Females insert their eggs into the leaf or stalk tissues of host plants. The nymphs emerge and pass through five distinct instars, all of which feed on plant phloem. The speed of the life cycle is highly temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple overlapping generations in tropical and subtropical environments.
Damage patterns. Feeding activities result in characteristic chlorosis and stunting of the maize plant. However, the vector-borne diseases are the most damaging, as they interrupt the vascular system, prevent proper nutrient transport, and lead to reduced ear development, distorted plant architecture, and often complete loss of grain quality and quantity.
Control measures. Effective management of Dalbulus elimatus requires an integrated approach to suppress population density and transmission of disease:
- Selection and planting of resistant maize hybrids adapted to the region.
- Crop rotation to break the life cycle of the pest.
- Removal of alternate weed hosts and volunteer corn plants in and around fields.
- Strategic application of systemic insecticides during critical stages of early crop development.
