Description
The corn leafhopper (Dalbulus maidis) is a small insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is widely recognized as a serious pest in maize production, particularly due to its ability to colonize fields rapidly and its critical role in transmitting plant-pathogenic viruses and mollicutes.
This species primarily attacks maize crops. Feeding damage typically occurs in younger plants, as leafhoppers prefer tender tissue. While direct feeding can cause wilting and yellowing of the foliage, the indirect damage caused by disease transmission is far more economically devastating for farmers worldwide.
The biology of Dalbulus maidis is well-adapted to maize-growing environments. Adults deposit eggs into the leaf tissue, and the subsequent nymphs develop through several stages while feeding on plant sap. Their population growth is favored by warm, humid climates, allowing for multiple generations throughout the cropping season.
The primary economic threat stems from the transmission of corn stunt spiroplasma and other systemic diseases. These infections prevent the plant from developing proper ears, cause severe stunting, and significantly reduce yields.
