Plain tiger

Systematic position: The Plain tiger (Danaus chrysippus) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Nymphalidae. While widely recognized for its mimicry and vibrant coloration, it is considered a pest in specific agricultural contexts where its larvae thrive on host plants, potentially impacting agricultural and ornamental flora.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this species belong to the Apocynaceae family. The larvae are specialized feeders on plants such as Cynanchum and other related species. When these plants are grown commercially or found in proximity to field crops, the caterpillar's feeding activity can result in significant foliage loss.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adult females lay eggs on the leaves of host plants. Upon hatching, the larvae go through several instars, feeding voraciously on the plant tissue. They sequester cardiac glycosides from their host plants, which makes them unpalatable to most predators. The life cycle is typically shorter in warmer climates, allowing for multiple generations per year.

Damage patterns: The larvae are responsible for the damage, as they consume leaves, shoots, and sometimes young buds. Their feeding leads to partial or complete skeletonization of the leaves. High populations can cause severe defoliation, which stunts the plant's growth and reduces the overall harvest quality, especially in susceptible young crops.

Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Danaus chrysippus:

• Manual removal of larvae in small-scale cultivation or nurseries.
