Description
The wheat head armyworm (Dargida albilinea) is a nocturnal moth species belonging to the family Noctuidae. It is a well-documented agricultural pest, primarily known for causing damage to cereal crops in North America, where the larvae feed on the developing heads of grains.
The primary host plants for this species include wheat, barley, oats, and sometimes corn. While larvae are general feeders on foliage in their early stages, their economic impact is most significant when they shift their feeding behavior to the ripening grain heads of cereals.
The biology of Dargida albilinea involves a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths emerge in the spring, and females deposit eggs on the leaves of host plants. After hatching, the larvae go through several developmental stages (instars) before pupating in the soil or under surface debris to overwinter.
Damage symptoms are distinctive: larvae feed on the glumes and the soft kernels within the spike. By chewing through the base of the glumes, they often cause the upper part of the head to turn white (a condition known as "whitehead"). Severe infestations can result in significant yield losses due to both grain consumption and damage to the supporting rachis.
Management of the wheat head armyworm requires a strategic integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Recommended practices include:
