Description
The Maple midge (Dasineura aceris) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae (gall midges). This insect is a specialized pest that targets maple trees. Due to its minute size and the specific way it induces plant tissue changes, it is considered a significant pest in nurseries, parks, and urban forestry.
The host plants are primarily species of the genus Acer. The female midge deposits eggs into the leaf tissues during the spring growth phase. The feeding larvae secrete substances that stimulate the tree to form galls—abnormal outgrowths that provide both shelter and a food source for the developing insect.
Regarding its biology and life cycle, the Maple midge typically overwinters in the soil as a pupa or a late-stage larva within the leaf litter. In spring, adults emerge synchronized with the bud break of the host trees. After mating, females initiate the infection cycle, which can continue through the season depending on environmental conditions.
The damage is mainly aesthetic and physiological. The presence of numerous galls on the leaf surface disrupts photosynthesis, causes leaf curling, and may lead to premature leaf drop. While healthy mature trees can often withstand infestations, young or stressed saplings may suffer significant loss of vigor and potential dieback if the infestation is severe over several seasons.

- Sanitation by raking and destroying fallen leaves in autumn to disrupt the overwintering cycle.
