The foxtail gall midge (Dasineura alopecuri) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae within the order Diptera. This tiny midge focuses its life cycle on the reproductive structures of grasses, making it a significant challenge for seed production farms.

The primary host plant for this species is the meadow foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis). The insect thrives in environments where this grass is grown for seed, as the midge larvae directly consume the developing seeds within the florets, leading to substantial yield losses in specialized nurseries.

The biological cycle of the foxtail gall midge is strictly synchronized with the flowering phenology of its host. The pest overwinter as larvae in the soil. Upon the arrival of spring and the onset of the grass blooming season, adults emerge, mate, and lay eggs inside the developing florets where larvae will eventually reside and feed.
