The Citrus gall midge (Dasineura citri) is a minute insect belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is a highly specialized pest that primarily targets plants within the Rutaceae family, often causing economic losses in citrus orchards and nursery stock.

The primary hosts of this pest are citrus species, including lemons, oranges, and mandarins. The insect specifically colonizes young, tender leaves and developing shoots, which are essential for the plant's growth and vigor, making the infestation particularly detrimental to young plantations.

The life cycle of Dasineura citri is closely synchronized with the phenology of citrus flushing. Adult females deposit eggs into the leaf tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the plant tissues, which induces the formation of galls — abnormal growths where the larvae reside and feed until they pupate, completing their development protected within the plant structure.

The damage caused by this pest is characterized by severe leaf distortion, curling, and the formation of characteristic galls on the foliage. These deformations disrupt the photosynthetic capacity of the leaves, resulting in stunted shoot growth, diminished tree health, and potential fruit yield reduction if the infestation remains uncontrolled.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to protect citrus health:

• Regular inspection of new growth during the spring and summer flushes.
• Mechanical removal and disposal of galled leaves or shoots to reduce the pest population density.
• Application of selective systemic insecticides during early infestation stages.
• Implementation of biological control measures to preserve natural predators that keep gall midge populations in check.

Chemical control must be timed carefully to avoid harming beneficial pollinating insects. Agronomists recommend monitoring local population levels through yellow sticky traps and using horticultural oils or systemic chemicals only when economic thresholds are reached, ensuring long-term sustainability of the orchard.
