Cordyline gall midge

The cordyline gall midge (Dasineura cordylineae) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is a significant threat to various species of the genus Cordyline, primarily affecting commercial nursery stock and ornamental collections where high-density planting provides ideal conditions for the pest to thrive.

The primary host for this gall midge is Cordyline australis. The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which feed internally within the plant tissues. This feeding process triggers abnormal plant growth, resulting in galls and severe malformations of the growing tips, which can permanently stunt the plant's development and diminish its aesthetic value.

The life cycle begins when adult females lay eggs in the tight, young leaf bases or the apical meristem of the host plant. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the soft tissue to feed. As they develop, they create a protected environment within the plant structure. Pupation typically occurs within the gall or in the surrounding soil, depending on the environmental conditions and the specific generation cycle.

Symptoms of infestation include curled, deformed, or necrotic leaves at the center of the plant growth point. In cases of high infestation levels, the apical bud may die entirely, forcing the plant to produce side shoots that are also susceptible to further damage. This impact is especially detrimental to young plants intended for retail sale.

To manage and control Dasineura cordylineae, growers should implement the following strategies:

• Strict sanitation by promptly removing and destroying all infested plant material to reduce the pest population.
• Application of systemic insecticides that can reach the larvae hidden within the leaf tissues.
• Monitoring of adult activity using yellow sticky traps to time the application of contact treatments effectively.
• Maintaining healthy plant vigor through balanced nutrition to help the plant withstand minor infestations.
