Description
The Hawthorn gall midge (Dasineura crataegi) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. These minute midges are known for their ability to induce the formation of abnormal growth structures, commonly referred to as galls, on the foliage of their host plants.
The primary host for this species is the hawthorn (Crataegus). The midge targets the terminal buds of young shoots, where the environmental conditions are most suitable for the survival and development of the larvae during the early stages of the growing season.
The life cycle of the hawthorn gall midge usually consists of a single generation per year. Adult flies emerge in spring, coinciding with the bud-burst phase of the hawthorn. Females lay eggs inside the developing buds, and the hatching larvae induce the plant to form a rosette-like gall, which serves as both food and shelter.
The damage caused by these insects is characterized by distorted, tightly clustered leaves forming a distinct ball-shaped or rosette gall. Severe infestations lead to stunted shoot growth, apical necrosis, and overall stress to the plant, which can reduce the aesthetic value of ornamental hawthorn varieties.
Management strategies focus on physical removal and chemical prevention. Pruning and destroying the galls before the larvae emerge is the most effective cultural method to reduce the local population. In commercial or high-value garden settings, contact or systemic insecticides may be applied during the early spring when adults are active but before eggs are laid.
