The Ash leaf gall midge (Dasineura fraxinea) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is an obligate feeder on trees of the genus Fraxinus (ash), causing the formation of distinct galls on foliage. The insect is primarily observed in European forests and urban landscaping, where it can cause significant aesthetic and physiological impact.
The biology of this species is highly synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. The adults, which are tiny flies, emerge in the spring corresponding with the bud burst of ash trees. Females deposit eggs into developing leaves, and upon hatching, the larvae secrete substances that induce the formation of galls — abnormal outgrowths of plant tissue that provide both shelter and nutrients for the developing midge.
