The lucerne flower midge (Dasineura lupulini) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It primarily affects alfalfa crops, focusing its destructive activity on the reproductive structures of the plant, which makes it a major concern for seed production.

The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which develop inside the flower buds of the alfalfa. By feeding on the internal organs of the bud, the larvae prevent proper flower development, leading to deformation and subsequent bud drop. This direct damage drastically reduces the plant's ability to produce seeds.

The life cycle of Dasineura lupulini is closely linked to the phenology of alfalfa. Adult midges emerge in synchrony with the bud development stage.
