Lucerne flower midge

The lucerne flower midge (Dasineura medicaginis) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. It is a highly specialized pest that primarily affects alfalfa (lucerne) crops. Due to its narrow host range, it is considered a major limiting factor in alfalfa seed production, causing significant economic losses for growers worldwide.

The pest specifically attacks the reproductive parts of the alfalfa plant. By targeting the developing flower buds, the midge prevents normal flowering and subsequent seed set. This specialization makes the midge particularly destructive, as the damage directly translates into reduced yields of valuable forage legume seeds.

The life cycle of Dasineura medicaginis involves multiple generations per year, depending on environmental conditions. Larvae overwinter in the soil within silken cocoons. Adult emergence typically coincides with the onset of alfalfa budding. Females oviposit into the closed buds, where the larvae hatch and begin feeding on the floral tissues, causing the characteristic deformations that protect them during development.

The damage caused by this insect is visible as swollen, distorted flower buds that fail to open. Inside these 'galls,' larvae feed until they reach maturity. Heavily infested plants show a marked reduction in flower numbers and a high rate of bud drop. The loss of reproductive potential significantly impacts the total seed yield, especially in regions where the midge population is high.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Recommended practices include:

• Maintaining spatial isolation between old and newly established alfalfa fields.
• Utilizing deep autumn tillage to disrupt overwintering sites in the soil.
• Timing harvest or mowing to interrupt the insect's life cycle before larval development is complete.
