The poppy midge (Dasineura papaveris) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. It is a highly specialized pest that targets various species of poppies, including Papaver somniferum. Due to its minute size, the pest is often overlooked until significant crop damage occurs.

The pest primarily infests the capsules and buds of poppy plants. The larvae feed on the internal tissues, which causes severe developmental issues. This specificity makes it a serious threat to commercial poppy production, as the damage directly impacts seed quality and overall yield quantity.

The life cycle involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult females lay eggs in unopened buds or developing seed pods. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the tissue to feed. The species typically overwinters in the soil as a pupa, ensuring its survival during cold seasons and re-emergence when environmental conditions become favorable.

Symptoms of infestation include distorted, dark-colored, and stunted seed pods. When split open, the interior of these pods reveals numerous small, creamy-white to yellowish larvae. The damage prevents proper seed development, often leading to total loss of the affected capsules if not managed promptly.

Effective management requires a combination of preventive and chemical strategies. Cultural practices are paramount, including proper crop rotation and plowing after harvest to destroy pupae in the soil. Chemical control with targeted insecticides applied during the bud formation stage is effective in preventing egg-laying and reducing the overall population pressure in the field.
