Description
Systematic position. The blackberry leaf midge (Dasineura plicatrix) belongs to the order Diptera, family Cecidomyiidae (gall midges). This insect is a specialized pest known for its ability to induce deformation in the foliage of plants within the Rubus genus, primarily raspberries and blackberries.
Host crops and impact. This midge predominantly attacks cultivated raspberries and blackberries. The economic impact is most severe in nurseries and young plantations where the larvae cause significant growth inhibition. Persistent infestation weakens the host plant, making it more susceptible to environmental stressors and secondary pathogenic diseases.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult midges emerge and lay eggs on the tender, expanding leaflets of terminal shoots. Upon hatching, the larvae reside on the leaf surface, feeding on plant tissues. Their saliva triggers a physiological response in the plant, causing the characteristic leaf curling and distortion.
Nature of damage. The primary symptom of a Dasineura plicatrix attack is the severe rolling and folding of leaf edges along the midrib. These deformed areas often appear thickened, discolored (yellowish or reddish), and necrotic. If the terminal shoot is heavily infested, it may become stunted, permanently deformed, and eventually die back.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Cultural practices, such as the early removal and destruction of infested shoot tips, can significantly reduce the pest population. Chemical control involves the application of systemic or contact insecticides during the adult flight period. Maintaining vigorous plant growth through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization also helps mitigate the effects of the infestation.
