Description
The pear leaf midge (Dasineura pyri) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the Cecidomyiidae family. It is a specialized pest that targets pear trees, causing significant deformation of young foliage and negatively impacting the growth of juvenile shoots in orchards.
This pest exclusively attacks pear trees (Pyrus species). It is particularly problematic in nurseries and young orchards where the continuous growth of tender leaves provides an ideal environment for the midge to lay its eggs and for the larvae to feed.
The biology of the species involves multiple generations per year. The insect overwinters as a larva in the soil. In spring, adults emerge to lay eggs in the folds of young, unexpanded leaves at the shoot tips. The feeding larvae secrete substances that cause the leaf margins to curl and swell.
Damage is characterized by tight, necrotic rolls along the edges of the leaves. These rolls eventually turn brown or black and become brittle. As a result of this infestation, shoot growth is severely stunted, and if the infestation is heavy, the overall vigor of the tree is diminished.
