Host plants: This pest primarily affects different varieties of roses and briars. The midges prefer to attack the tender, young leaves on the tips of the shoots, which are the most vulnerable parts of the plant during the early growth stages.
Biology and life cycle: The midge overwinters as a larva within a cocoon in the soil beneath the rose bushes. In spring, as temperatures rise, pupation occurs, followed by the emergence of adults. The females lay eggs in the folds of developing leaves, and the larvae begin feeding upon hatching. Several generations can occur within a single growing season.
