Description

The sage gall midge (Dasineura salviae) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. This specialist pest targets plants within the Salvia genus, specifically causing significant growth distortions on the apical parts of the stems and leaves, which can severely impact crop quality.

The primary host for this pest is common sage (Salvia officinalis). The larvae feed on the young tissues of the leaves, which triggers a localized reaction from the plant. This response results in the formation of galls — abnormal tissue growths that provide both food and protection for the developing larvae during their life cycle.

The life cycle of Dasineura salviae typically includes several generations per season, depending on the climatic conditions. Adult midges emerge in spring and lay eggs in the buds of young shoots. As the larvae begin to feed, the plant cells respond to the infestation, causing the foliage to curl and swell into characteristic galls that enclose the larvae.

The damage caused by the midge is primarily cosmetic and physiological. Because the leaves and tips become deformed, the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis is reduced, and the biomass harvested for medicinal or culinary purposes is drastically compromised. In severe cases of infestation, entire branch tips can wither and die.

Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Since the larvae are protected inside the galls, contact insecticides are often ineffective. It is recommended to prune and destroy affected plant parts early in the season to prevent the life cycle from continuing and to reduce the population pressure in subsequent generations.
