The willow leaf-rolling gall midge (Dasineura tortrix) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. This species is widely recognized as a specialized pest that primarily targets various species of willow (Salix). Its presence is often detected in nurseries, parks, and natural riverine habitats where willows are abundant.

The life cycle of Dasineura tortrix is strictly synchronized with the phenology of its host plant. The larvae overwinter in the soil within protective cocoons. In early spring, during the budding phase of willow trees, the adult midges emerge to mate and lay eggs on the newly expanding leaves, ensuring that the larvae have immediate access to succulent plant tissues.

The damage caused by this insect is distinctive: the larvae feed on the leaf tissues, inducing chemical changes that cause the leaf margins to curl and roll tightly. This creates a protective gall structure. Inside these rolls, larvae are shielded from predators and adverse weather, allowing them to complete their development stages safely.

The primary concern regarding this pest is its impact on the host's vitality. Persistent curling and deformation of leaves impair photosynthesis, which slows down the growth rate of the host tree. In severe infestations, the foliage may prematurely senesce and drop, leaving the plant susceptible to secondary pathogens and reducing the aesthetic value of ornamental specimens.

Managing populations of the willow leaf-rolling gall midge involves a combination of mechanical and chemical strategies:

• Implementing sanitation practices, such as raking and destroying fallen leaves during autumn to reduce the overwintering population.
