Dasiops

The genus Dasiops belongs to the family Lonchaeidae, commonly known as lance flies. These insects are significant agricultural pests in various parts of the world, particularly in regions where passion fruit and other sensitive horticultural crops are cultivated. Their larvae are strictly herbivorous and specialize in developing within plant tissues.

Dasiops primarily infests the reproductive structures of plants, including buds, flowers, and developing fruits. The impact on passion fruit production is particularly severe, as the larvae feed on the internal parts of the bud, causing them to wither and fail to open. This disruption to the reproductive cycle has a direct and measurable impact on total fruit yield.

The life cycle of the pest involves egg-laying by the adult female into the soft tissues of the host plant. The larval stage is the most destructive, as they consume the interior of the fruit or flower, causing structural damage. Once mature, the larvae leave the host plant to pupate, usually in the soil, which completes their biological strategy for survival and dispersal.

The harmfulness of Dasiops is exacerbated by its ability to cause secondary infection.
