Dastarcus

Dastarcus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Zopheridae. This genus of beetles occupies a specific niche in the entomofauna, often associated with wood materials and stored plant-based products. In an agronomic context, certain species of this genus may be considered as secondary pests that infest weakened crops or stored agricultural stocks.

The range of affected crops includes primarily woody species, as well as processed grains and legumes stored for extended periods. Dastarcus prefers environments with high humidity, where the development of fungal microflora promotes the degradation of plant tissues, creating favorable conditions for the feeding of both larvae and adults.

The biology and life cycle of this pest are closely linked to environmental conditions. Females lay eggs in bark crevices or inside damaged plant tissues. The larvae pass through several instars, feeding actively on the organic substrate. The entire transformation cycle from egg to adult can take from several months to a year, depending on the temperature regime and the availability of food sources.

The damage pattern involves boring tunnels inside plant tissues, which disrupts the structural integrity and leads to a reduction in the market quality of the produce. In storage facilities, the pest contributes to the contamination of grain with excrement and biological residues, which accelerates spoilage processes and creates foci for secondary contamination by mold fungi.

Protection measures are based on strict adherence to phytosanitary protocols. These include:

• Control of product moisture levels to prevent the accumulation of dampness.
