Description

The crucifer root maggot (Delia sanctijacobi) is a member of the Anthomyiidae family and is recognized as a significant agricultural pest. It primarily targets plants within the Brassicaceae family, making it a critical concern for vegetable growers globally. While the adult fly is often inconspicuous, its larval stage causes severe damage to crops, potentially leading to total yield loss.

This pest infests a wide range of commercially important crops, including various types of cabbage, radish, turnip, rutabaga, and horseradish. The pest is particularly aggressive during the early stages of plant development, often attacking seedlings immediately after transplanting or germination. In many cases, these secondary infections are more damaging to the plant than the feeding activity of the larvae themselves.
