Protea mealybug
Delottococcus proteae
Description
Delottococcus proteae is a significant member of the mealybug family (Pseudococcidae) within the order Hemiptera. This pest has become a primary concern for growers specializing in proteaceous crops, as it thrives in the specific microclimatic conditions provided by both greenhouses and open-field cultivation of ornamental plants.
The primary hosts for this mealybug include various members of the Proteaceae family, specifically the Protea, Leucadendron, and Leucospermum genera. The pest colonizes the foliage, stems, and flower buds, making it difficult to detect during the early stages of infestation, which is when preventative measures are most critical.
The biology of Delottococcus proteae is characterized by a series of nymphal stages leading to the adult phase. Females are protected by a characteristic waxy, white secretion, which makes them highly resistant to common contact-based chemical treatments. The pest often reproduces via parthenogenesis, which contributes to its rapid colonization rate in suitable host environments.
Infestation damage manifests as stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and general plant decline due to constant sap-sucking. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, a secondary complication that covers the plant surface, inhibits photosynthesis, and renders the flowers or foliage unmarketable for the cut flower industry.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this mealybug. Growers should focus on strict quarantine protocols for new plant stock and regular monitoring of established colonies. Control strategies often involve rotating systemic insecticides to prevent resistance, as well as biological control options, such as the introduction of predatory insects or parasitoid wasps to keep populations below economic injury levels.
