Systematic position: The Delphinium leaf miner (often classified under the family Agromyzidae within the order Diptera) is a specialized insect pest. It targets specific herbaceous perennials, primarily within the Ranunculaceae family, causing damage by mining the internal tissues of the leaves.
Host plants: The primary host is the Delphinium genus. However, the pest also infests closely related ornamental plants such as Aconitum (monkshood) and Aquilegia (columbine). It is particularly problematic in nurseries and private gardens where these host plants are grown in close proximity.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle comprises four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult fly lays eggs within the leaf tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae feed between the upper and lower epidermis of the leaf, creating distinct winding tunnels. The pupation process typically occurs either within the leaf mine or by dropping into the soil, depending on the specific species involved.
Damage patterns and economic importance: Damage is characterized by visible white, serpentine tunnels (mines) on the leaf surface. As the larva continues to feed, these mines expand, significantly reducing the plant's photosynthetic capacity. Control measures: Controlling the Delphinium leaf miner requires an integrated approach.
