Deltocephalus is a genus of insects in the order Hemiptera, belonging to the family Cicadellidae, commonly known as leafhoppers. These small, agile insects are recognized as significant pests in agricultural environments, posing a threat to the productivity and health of various grain and forage crops.

The primary hosts for these pests include a variety of grasses and cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and oats. Deltocephalus species tend to thrive in fields where crops are stressed, causing widespread damage by piercing plant tissues and extracting essential phloem sap, which deprives the plant of necessary nutrients.

The biology of the genus follows a life cycle of incomplete metamorphosis. Typically, these insects overwinter as eggs or nymphs sheltered within the soil or crop debris. Throughout the growing season, multiple overlapping generations can occur. Population outbreaks are frequently triggered by warm, dry weather conditions, which favor rapid development and reproduction.

The damage caused by Deltocephalus manifests as yellowing (chlorosis), leaf curling, and overall stunting of the plants. Beyond the direct damage from feeding, their most severe impact is their role as biological vectors for various phytoplasmas and plant viruses, including wheat dwarf virus, which can lead to total crop failure if not managed early.
