Myrtle warbler

The myrtle warbler (Latin Setophaga coronata, formerly Dendroica coronata) is a small songbird belonging to the wood-warbler family (Parulidae) within the order Passeriformes. While primarily insectivorous, it is frequently categorized as a nuisance in commercial agriculture due to its dietary shift towards fruits and berries during the autumn migratory season.

This species poses a significant threat to various berry-producing crops, including blueberries, grapes, and various ornamental shrubs. Farmers often observe severe damage in late summer and autumn, as the birds congregate in large numbers to feed on ripening crops to acquire necessary energy reserves for their long-distance migration.

The biology of the myrtle warbler is uniquely adapted to fruit consumption, as they have an unusual digestive ability to process the waxes found in certain berries, such as those of the bayberry (Myrica) and other similar shrubs. This biological trait drives them to aggressively seek out high-energy sugar sources available in commercial agricultural fields during the pre-migration period.

Damage caused by these birds manifests as missing berries and puncture marks on healthy fruit. By pecking at the skins, the birds create entry points for opportunistic pathogens, leading to rapid decay and secondary fungal infections. This often results in a loss of quality that renders the entire crop harvest unsalable due to mold and fruit breakdown.

Agricultural protection strategies primarily focus on exclusion. Installing bird netting is considered the most reliable method for protecting high-value crops. Additionally, farmers may employ integrated pest management techniques, such as the use of ultrasonic deterrents, scarecrows, or reflective streamers, though these methods often require rotation to prevent birds from becoming accustomed to the presence of deterrents.
