Description
Systematic position. Deraeocoris brevis is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. While many Deraeocoris species are predatory and beneficial, this specific species is known to cause damage to plant tissues, functioning as a plant-feeding pest under certain environmental conditions.
Host plants. The pest primarily targets deciduous trees, showing a preference for pome and stone fruits, including apples, pears, and plums. It is frequently observed in fruit orchards and plant nurseries where it impacts both foliage and fruit development.
Biology and life cycle. Adults overwinter in sheltered locations, such as tree bark crevices or leaf litter. As spring temperatures rise, they emerge to feed on developing buds. The insect goes through several nymphal stages before reaching adulthood, with one or two generations per season depending on the climate.
Damage and impact. Feeding occurs through the piercing-sucking mouthparts of the bugs. They inject saliva into plant tissues, which causes the deformation of young leaves, stunting of shoot growth, and necrosis of developing fruitlets, often leading to premature fruit drop and decreased overall harvest quality.
Protection measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Practices include:
- monitoring populations using yellow sticky traps;
- maintaining orchard hygiene by clearing debris;
- applying systemic insecticides if infestation thresholds are exceeded during the budding or post-bloom stages.
