Description

Systematic position. Deraeocoris ruber belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae (plant bugs). It is a unique insect species that functions as both a predator, feeding on aphids, mites, and scale insects, and a potential plant pest that can damage succulent plant tissues when prey is scarce.

Crops damaged. This insect is a polyphagous feeder, known to inhabit and occasionally damage a wide range of fruit trees including apple and pear, various berry bushes such as currants and raspberries, as well as several ornamental flowering plants and legumes found in agricultural settings.

Biology and life cycle. The species overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs typically embedded in the stems or leaf petioles of host plants. Upon hatching in spring, the nymphs progress through five developmental instars. The life cycle is relatively rapid, allowing for one or two generations per season depending on the geographic region and local temperature patterns.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. When feeding on plant fluids, Deraeocoris ruber inserts salivary enzymes that can result in localized necrosis, leaf curling, and stunted growth of shoots. Significant economic damage occurs when the bug population reaches high densities, leading to fruit deformation and a reduction in the overall vigor of the host plant.

Control measures. Effective management includes keeping gardens free of weeds and dead plant debris where eggs might overwinter.
