Systematic position: Deraeocoris signatus belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae (plant bugs). While many species within the genus Deraeocoris are known as beneficial predators that feed on aphids and mites, certain species, including D. signatus, exhibit phytophagous behavior, causing damage to various agricultural crops.

Host plants: This pest primarily affects fruit trees, berries, and several vegetable crops. In agricultural fields, it can also be found on cereals and ornamental plants, where it feeds on the sap of young stems, leaves, and buds, posing a risk to crop health and final yields.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The pest typically overwinters as an adult in sheltered habitats, such as leaf litter, tree bark, or plant debris. Once spring temperatures rise, the bugs emerge to feed on host tissues and subsequently lay eggs in plant stems or leaf tissue.

Nature of damage: The feeding process involves the injection of digestive enzymes into plant tissues, which causes necrosis, leaf curling, and structural deformation of buds and fruits. These feeding injuries lead to significant plant stress, stunted growth, premature fruit drop, and a decrease in the overall marketable quality of the produce.
