Dexia rustica is a species of parasitic fly belonging to the family Tachinidae within the order Diptera. Unlike many other insects labeled as agricultural pests, this fly is considered a beneficial organism in the field due to its parasitic relationship with harmful soil-dwelling larvae.

The biological significance of this species lies in its larval stage, which parasitizes the larvae of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae), including the common cockchafer. By preying on these root-feeding pests, Dexia rustica serves as a valuable natural regulator that helps protect the root systems of various crops and forest trees.

The life cycle of the fly involves a metamorphosis process. The female lays eggs in the soil near the host larvae. Upon hatching, the fly larva locates the host, penetrates its cuticle, and develops by consuming the internal tissues of the beetle larva, eventually killing the host before pupating in the soil.

In terms of agricultural impact, the presence of these flies is an indicator of a healthy ecosystem.
