Diaptomus

Diaptomus is a genus of small copepod crustaceans belonging to the order Calanoida and the family Diaptomidae. While they play a significant role in the natural food web of aquatic ecosystems as a primary food source for fish, they can become a significant nuisance in managed aquaculture and hydroponic facilities where they compete for resources or act as intermediate hosts for parasites.

These organisms primarily affect high-intensity aquaculture systems and indoor aquatic nurseries. In such environments, a rapid population growth of Diaptomus can lead to increased turbidity and biological pollution, which adversely affects the health of cultivated water plants and stock animals, causing significant economic losses to the producer.

The biology of Diaptomus follows a complex life cycle involving naupliar and copepodite stages. They are highly resilient and capable of rapid reproduction in favorable conditions. By feeding extensively on phytoplankton and dissolved organic matter, they can significantly disrupt the chemical balance of the aquatic environment, depleting nutrients intended for plant growth.

The damage caused by these crustaceans is often indirect, resulting from the depletion of phytoplankton and the potential transmission of parasitic infections to commercial fish stocks. Furthermore, their sheer abundance in filtration systems leads to clogging, reduced water flow, and inefficient nutrient uptake for aquatic crops, which requires constant intervention from agronomists and aquaculturists.

Effective management strategies include rigorous mechanical filtration to remove nauplii and adult stages from the water supply. Maintaining optimal water quality through UV sterilization and controlled nutrient inputs helps suppress their population. In some cases, introducing specific planktivorous fish or utilizing bio-security measures during water intake is essential for maintaining a healthy and productive water-based production system.
