Description
The genus Diarsia belongs to the family Noctuidae within the order Lepidoptera. These moths are widely distributed and their larval stages, commonly referred to as cutworms or rustic moths, are significant pests that affect various agricultural and horticultural systems across different climatic zones.
These insects are highly polyphagous, meaning they feed on a diverse array of host plants. Diarsia larvae are known to attack cereals, legumes, various vegetable crops, and ornamental plants. The greatest damage is usually observed during the early growth stages of plants when seedlings are most vulnerable.
The biology of Diarsia species involves complete metamorphosis. They typically overwinter as late-instar larvae in the soil or beneath leaf litter. In the spring, they resume feeding, pupate in the soil, and emerge as moths that deposit eggs on host plants. Larval feeding causes significant injury, ranging from leaf skeletonization to the complete severance of stems at the soil surface. Because the larvae are primarily nocturnal and hide in the soil or under debris during the day, damage is often detected only after substantial loss has already occurred.
