Diastylis is a genus of small crustaceans belonging to the order Cumacea and the family Diastylidae. Primarily residing in marine benthic environments, these organisms generally do not pose a threat to terrestrial crops; however, in coastal agriculture, their presence in improperly treated marine sediments used as fertilizers can introduce them into agricultural soils, leading to unintended ecological impacts.
Systematically, these organisms are categorized as malacostracan crustaceans. While they are adapted to saline and aquatic conditions, their occasional introduction into the soil rhizosphere via organic amendments creates an artificial environment where they may interact with root systems, potentially causing physiological stress to young crops that are sensitive to changes in soil composition.
