Description

Systematic position. The species belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Noctuidae. It is classified as a subterranean or "cutworm" type pest, known for its nocturnal behavior and tendency to spend the daylight hours hidden beneath the soil surface, which complicates early detection and control.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. The caterpillar stage is the most destructive. Overwintering typically occurs as mature larvae buried deep within the soil, allowing the species to survive harsh winter conditions and emerge to feed early in the spring as soon as temperatures rise.

Host plants and damage patterns. This species is a polyphagous pest that feeds on a wide range of agricultural crops. The larvae cause significant mechanical damage by severing the stems of young seedlings at or below the soil line. They can also feed on roots and underground vegetative parts, leading to stunted growth or total plant mortality.
