Virginia opossum

The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) belongs to the order Didelphimorphia and the family Didelphidae. As an opportunistic omnivore, this marsupial is frequently encountered in agricultural settings where it feeds on a variety of cultivated plants, categorizing it as a significant vertebrate pest for fruit and vegetable growers.

The biology of the species is defined by its nocturnal behavior and high adaptability. Opossums are skilled climbers with prehensile tails, allowing them to access fruit trees and garden beds with ease. Their reproductive biology requires females to forage extensively to feed their young, leading them to frequently raid agricultural properties during the peak harvest season.

Opossums cause damage to a wide range of crops, including stone fruits, apples, grapes, and corn. They are notorious for sampling large amounts of fruit, taking a single bite of many specimens, which effectively destroys the market value of the entire harvest. Their feeding habits leave behind damaged tissue that becomes a breeding ground for insects and fungal pathogens.
