Dikraneura
Dikraneura
Description
Dikraneura is a genus of insects belonging to the family Cicadellidae, commonly known as leafhoppers. These small, hemipteran pests are significant in agricultural settings, as they feed on a variety of cultivated plants, including vegetables, field crops, and ornamental varieties, by piercing plant tissues and extracting sap.
The biology of Dikraneura involves a hemimetabolous development cycle consisting of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females typically lay eggs within the leaf or stem tissue of host plants. Nymphs, which resemble smaller, wingless versions of adults, undergo several molts while feeding on the underside of leaves. The population size is heavily influenced by seasonal temperature and humidity levels.
Damage caused by Dikraneura is characterized by chlorotic spots on the leaves, which are the result of the insect's piercing-sucking mouthparts. As the feeding intensity increases, these spots coalesce, leading to leaf yellowing (stippling), curling, and premature senescence. In severe infestations, the overall vigor of the plant is significantly compromised, resulting in reduced yields and stunted growth.
Beyond the direct impact on plant vitality, these leafhoppers are often implicated in the transmission of various plant viruses and phytoplasmas. The combination of direct sap loss and the potential for disease transmission makes the genus a major concern for integrated pest management programs, especially in high-value vegetable production.
- Sanitation practices, including the removal of infested plant debris.
- Weed management to eliminate alternative host plants in and around fields.
- Deployment of yellow sticky cards to monitor population dynamics and timing of control.
- Application of selective insecticides targeting nymphal stages to prevent adulthood.
- Encouraging natural predators such as parasitic wasps and predatory bugs.
