Description

The Cedrela leafhopper (Dikrella cedrelae) is a specialized pest belonging to the Cicadellidae family, order Hemiptera. This insect poses a significant threat to forestry plantations and ornamental landscapes, specifically targeting trees within the Meliaceae family.

The primary hosts for this pest are members of the genus Cedrela, most notably Cedrela odorata (Spanish cedar). The insect shows a strong trophic preference for these trees, feeding primarily on the sap found in the tender new growth and foliage.

The life cycle of Dikrella cedrelae includes egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females typically deposit eggs directly into the tissues of the leaf blades or petioles. Nymphal development takes place on the underside of the leaves, where they pass through several instars, feeding and growing until they reach the adult winged stage.

The damage is characterized by chlorotic spotting on the leaves, caused by the piercing-sucking mouthparts of the insect. In cases of high population density, premature yellowing and leaf abscission occur, which severely stresses the tree, inhibits growth, and reduces overall vigor, making the plant more susceptible to secondary infections.
